![]() You don't expect a movie about the hijack but a movie about the depressive but true Brazilian reality. I enjoy watch this movie, direction and actors did a good work. Sandro was just another "invisible" boy taken by the poverty, the drugs, fear and violence that surround him and gives to him no opportunity and no choice but being a thief. Another horrible but true portrait of living in a country well known by its social differences. Directed by Bruno Barreto, the film features a cast that includes Michel Gomes. This all story took place in south of Rio Janeiro, Brazil, and show us the sequence of events that took place in the Sandro's life, a poor boy that hijacks Bus 174 and takes few hostages on June 12, 2000. Despite her efforts to help him, Sandro cannot escape his hard reality, and ultimately becomes the hostage-taker on Bus 174. Marisa meanwhile finds her way to the center, and mistakes Sandro for her own son. It is there that he meets Marisa's long-lost boy, Alessandro. The film is based on events and theories surrounding the Maravilla Hill case in Puerto Rico adapted from Anne Nelson s book, Murder Under Two Flags. After becoming a hardened survivor of the Candelaria massacre (an attempt by Rio police to clean up the city by murdering street kids as they slept), he eventually finds himself in a juvenile detention home. 174 First to last stop 174 30 Last stop to station. He runs away, intent on reaching Copacabana, where his mother once promised to take him. On the outskirts of Rio, another boy, Sandro, finds his mother stabbed to death in her shop. After she changed her life and become a Jesus follower, she becomes determined to find her child. (Even the very tired night-time helicopter shot around the large statue of Jesus that stands on the mountaintop outside Rio is recycled once again. When Marisa is unable to pay a debt, her baby, Alessandro, is taken away from her by a drug dealer. The two Alessandros will meet on the mean streets of Rio, witness various police attempts to deal with the “riff-raff” children by murdering them wholesale, and will bond in prison and end up sharing an (all-too-short) life of crime. Growing up on streets, the story culminates at the infamous episode of June 12th 2000, when Sandro hijacked bus 174. In the meantime, another Alessandro is taken from his mother as a baby by a local drug kingpin, setting off a years-long search for him once she finds religion and gets off drugs. Sandro was a boy who loved to sing rap, to kiss, to stare the statue of Christ the Redeemer and dreamed to go visit Copacabana. A typical product of the grinding poverty that afflicts parts of Latin America, he is so badly educated that he is unable to write down the rap music he invents. He seems to think that prospective international audiences haven’t a clue about the rampant poverty (and the attendant violence) that exists in the favelas of Rio, but, in fact, we’ve seen it all before in all too many films, going back at least as far as “Pixote.” Even the fact that the police are often as violent and nasty as the criminals they pursue is fairly well-established by now.Īs he tells it, the hostage-taker, Alessandro, is set on a violent criminal path by the murder of his mother, a cafe-owner.
